Celebrated on the 24 August, with the
emblem of the knife, the apostle martyr born in Cana in Galilee in the
first century, died in the half of the first century probably in Syria.
The history of the apostle Bartholomew contains many uncertainties, the
martyrdom of the saint is now implicated in many legendary events. The
real name of Bartholomew was Nathanael (gift of God), he was a preacher
in Armenia, Mesopotamia and India, known for its ability of healing the
sick, sentenced to death, he was first skinned alive and then crucified.
His skull is kept in the cathedral dedicated to him in Frankfurt, Germany.
The legend of St. Bartholomew is also mentioned in the Universal Judgment
in the Sistine Chapel: the saint shows the skin that the torturers had
taken off to him, and in the features of the face, deformed by suffering,
the great Michelangelo wanted to give us his self-portrait..
